"Basic" guides need no maths, while "Medium" ones add a worked example in rand. Betway's own terms always decide what applies to your account.

How online casinos work

Your Betway account holds a wallet, and everything you play comes out of it. Money arrives by card, EFT or a Betway Bucks voucher from retailers such as Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers or SPAR, and leaves by EFT, Instant Money or voucher.

Studios build the games and set their maths. Betway's lobby lists about 2,975 titles from providers such as Evolution, Pragmatic Play and Spribe, the studio behind Aviator. Slots and crash games use a random number generator, while live casino streams a real dealer whose cards or wheel decide each round.

Cash and bonus money sit in separate balances, and unwagered Betway Bucks voucher funds cannot be withdrawn. The main Betway guide covers the cashier and app.

RTP explained

RTP means return to player: the share of all stakes a game is designed to pay back over a very large number of rounds. At 96%, the average is R96 back per R100 staked, and R4 stays with the house.

The key words are "very large" and "average". Stake R1,000 in total and the long-run average is R960, yet your real session can land far above or below that. RTP never promises when a win arrives, and a game never "catches up" after a cold run.

Where to find a game's RTP

Open the game info or paytable screen, or the studio's own page. The studio lists 12 Masks of Fire Drums, the Welcome Pack slot, at 96.00%.

Volatility explained

Two slots can share an RTP of 96% and still feel nothing alike. Volatility describes how the return is spread out.

  • Low volatility

Frequent small wins, a gentler balance and longer sessions.

  • High volatility

Quiet stretches, then occasional big wins. The studio rates 12 Masks of Fire Drums as high.

Hit frequency is how often a spin pays anything, and win size is how big a payout can get. Budget tip: set your stake from the amount you are happy to lose, because a small balance lasts longer on a low-volatility game. Neither type changes the RTP.

How payouts are calculated

A payout is your stake multiplied by the multiplier the result earns. Stake R2 on a 5x win and the return is R10, of which R8 is profit. Slots decide the multiplier from symbols on paylines or in "ways to win" layouts.

  • Max win caps - studios limit a game's top prize to a multiple of the stake, and Betway's terms cap bet winnings at R1 million a day.
  • Crash games - in Aviator, cash out at 2.00x on a R10 stake and you receive R20; if the plane leaves first, the stake is lost.
  • Free Bets - winnings come without the stake, so a R10 Free Bet at odds of 3.00 pays R20, not R30.

Bonus terms explained

Casino bonuses in the Betway bonus wallet carry a 30x play-through within 30 days. In live casino, Sic Bo and Poker count for 50%, Baccarat, Craps and Blackjack for 10%, and Roulette and game shows for 2%, so a R100 roulette bet adds only R2. Sports bets count for 0%.

A single bet of 15% or more of the bonus counts as irregular play. Personal offers such as the Daily Reload (15-70%, 35x) apply only if Betway invited you by SMS or in the app. The free spins page covers the Welcome Pack.

Good to know

  • The 30x figure and 30-day clock are stated openly
  • Daily Cashback pays 5% of net slot and crash losses, up to R1,000

Watch out for

  • Live roulette and game shows count for just 2%
  • Spin value and wagering on spin winnings are not published

Fairness testing

A random number generator is software, so someone independent has to check it. Across the industry, specialist test labs examine a game's RNG for the studio, and provincial regulators approve gambling devices in their areas.

Raging River Trading holds a Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board manufacturer licence on top of its bookmaker licence. Betway's terms name no test lab, so this guide does not either. If a game freezes mid-round, call support on 0861 787 250 and check the status page.

Casino licensing explained

South African licences are granted by provincial gambling boards, with the National Gambling Board overseeing them. Betway runs under a brand licence held by two local companies.

Raging River Trading (Pty) Ltd

Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board
Licence
10181496-012
Holder
Eastern Dawn Sports (Pty) Ltd
Board
Mpumalanga Economic Regulator
Licence
9-2-1-09658

To read a licence, find the company, regulator and number in the footer, then match them with the National Gambling Board's verified operators list. The sister sites page has a checker.

KYC explained

KYC means "know your customer". Under FICA, an operator must confirm who you are before paying out, and Betway asks for ID and proof of address before withdrawals.

  1. 1

    Register honestly

Use your real name and ID details.

  2. 2

    Send documents

Upload your ID and proof of address.

  3. 3

    Wait for review

The timing is not published, so send clear copies.

  4. 4

    Withdraw

Payouts go to a bank account in your own name.

Betway Crypto Pay (Luno, Binance, VALR) opens only after full FICA.

Tax on winnings in South Africa

For tax on winnings South Africa players should rely on SARS itself. Its Capital Gains Tax guide says gains and losses from gambling, including casino winnings, are not subject to CGT, but are taxable for companies, close corporations, trusts and gambling outside South Africa.

What SARS does not say

SARS publishes no plain income-tax rule for casual winnings. Keep your account statements and ask a registered tax practitioner about your own case.

How to choose where to start

You do not need to read everything. Pick the line that sounds like you.

  • New player - how online casinos work, then RTP and KYC.
  • Bonus hunter - bonus terms, then the free spins page.
  • Budget-minded - volatility and payouts, then set a stake you can afford to lose.
  • Worried about play - the self-exclusion page, or the free NRGP helpline on 0800 006 008.

Play only with money you can afford to lose. Ready for the Welcome Pack? Sign up at Betway, and see the about page for how facts are checked.

Answers

Betway Casino Guides: Quick Answers

Does an RTP of 96% mean I get R96 back from every R100?

No. RTP is an average over a huge number of rounds, so a single session can end far above or below it. The free spins page shows how this applies to the slot in the Welcome Pack.

Is a high volatility slot better than a low one?

Neither is better, they just feel different. High volatility means longer quiet stretches and occasional bigger wins, while low volatility pays smaller wins more often. Choose the one that fits your budget.

Why does Betway ask for ID and proof of address?

South African FICA rules require an operator to confirm who you are before paying out. Sending clear, matching documents early avoids a delay when you want to withdraw.

Do I pay tax on casino winnings in South Africa?

SARS says capital gains from gambling authorised under South African law are not subject to CGT, but it publishes no plain income-tax rule for casual players. Keep records and ask a registered tax practitioner about your own case.

Which companies hold Betway's licences in South Africa?

Raging River Trading (Pty) Ltd holds Western Cape bookmaker licence 10181496-012, and Eastern Dawn Sports (Pty) Ltd holds Mpumalanga bookmaker licence 9-2-1-09658. Use the licence checker to see the registers.
