Who owns Betway, which brand shares its South African licence, and how to check any licence number yourself.

Stacks of casino chips

In short: Betway is owned by Super Group (NYSE: SGHC). In South Africa, Jackpot City is the brand that shares Betway's Mpumalanga bookmaker licence, 9-2-1-09658. To check any licence, match the number and company name on the National Gambling Board's Verified Operators list or on the provincial regulator's own page.

Who Owns Betway

If you have wondered who owns Betway, the short version is Super Group, a holding company listed on the New York Stock Exchange as SGHC. Betway is the flagship name in its line-up of sports betting and iGaming brands. The brand dates back to 2006, and Betway's own pages say it entered the South African market in 2017.

Super Group has two parts. Super Group International covers Europe and the Americas, and Super Group Africa houses Betway Africa, the team behind the Betway sportsbook and the Jackpot City brand on the continent. That layer shapes the brand, but it does not hold a South African licence.

In South Africa the licences belong to two local companies. Raging River Trading (Pty) Ltd operates Betway under a brand licence from Betway and holds Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board bookmaker licence 10181496-012. Eastern Dawn Sports (Pty) Ltd holds Mpumalanga Economic Regulator bookmaker licence 9-2-1-09658. Betway's footer says each is licensed to promote Betway South Africa by its provincial authority.

Super Group's brand page also names Spin Casino, Lucky Nugget Casino, Ruby Fortune, Royal Vegas, Gaming Club, Mummy's Gold, Kiwi's Treasure and Spin Palace. They share the parent company, but they are group brands in other markets, not Betway's South African sister sites.

True Sister Sites: Same Licence

A real sister site is one where the licence paperwork points to the same company. By that test, Betway has one sister site in South Africa: Jackpot City South Africa. Its own terms say Eastern Dawn Sports (Pty) Ltd is licensed to promote Jackpot City South Africa under the bookmaker licence issued by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator, number 9-2-1-09658. That is exactly the licence Betway lists for its second operating company.

The certificate that Betway links from its footer carries the trading name "Betway/Jackpot City", and an earlier one listed both betway.co.za and jackpotcity.co.za as approved bookmaker addresses. The National Gambling Board's list shows the same entry. In plain words, one licence stands behind two brand names.

Jackpot City is not on the Western Cape list, so licence 10181496-012 belongs to Betway alone. Super Group describes Jackpot City as a brand with more than 500 games, so the game mix is the main difference.

Check Any Licence Yourself

Pick a brand in the checker to see the licence number, the company behind it and a link to the National Gambling Board register where the same entry should appear.

Licence Checker

Pick a brand to see the licence numbers its own site prints and the regulator page where you can check them.

A licence number on a footer is a claim; the regulator's own list is the proof. If a brand's number is missing from the register, or the company name differs, ask the regulator before you deposit.

The National Gambling Board's Verified Operators list is built from the provincial boards' data and shows licence numbers, province and trading name, which makes it the best first stop. For company names, the Western Cape board keeps a licence-holder page; it lists names only, without numbers. The Mpumalanga regulator has no public licensee page we could confirm, but its certificates carry a check code that you can verify by SMS, using the number printed on the certificate. Betway's own pages have printed slightly different endings for the Western Cape number, so trust the register over any footer.

Same Group, Other Countries

Betway is a pan-African brand, and each country has its own site, company and regulator. These are the Betway Africa sites: one brand, licensed separately wherever it operates.

The table uses short names. In full they are the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (with the National Lottery Regulatory Commission), the Gaming Commission of Ghana, the Zambian Ministries of Tourism and Finance, the Gaming Board of Tanzania, the Malawi Gaming and Lottery Authority, the Inspectorate of Gaming of Mozambique, the Botswana Gambling Authority and the Gambling Board of Namibia. These are the operators and numbers each footer prints:

  • Nigeria - Digi Bay Limited, Lagos licence LSLGA/OP/OSB/BW221017.
  • Ghana - Sports Betting Group Ghana LTD, licences GCSB26P6530V and GCCA26F4809K.
  • Zambia - Emerald Bay Limited, Ministry of Tourism licence CL-000007/9-2023 and Ministry of Finance licences 0001117 and 0000027.
  • Tanzania - Media Bay Limited, licences SBI000000037 and OC000000019.
  • Mozambique - Jogos Socialis & Entretenimento, SA, authorisation 371/IGJ/2019.
  • Malawi, Botswana, Namibia - Golden Bay Limited, Delta Bay (Pty) Ltd and Desert Bay Technologies (Pty) Ltd; the footers name the regulator but print no licence number.

Super Group's list of eight Betway Africa markets does not yet name Namibia, but its site carries a Betway footer, so it is included here.

Same Platform, Different Operator

The names change from country to country, but the structure does not. Think of Betway as a brand and platform lent to a local licensed company, much like a franchise.

  1. 1

    Brand and platform

Betway Africa, part of Super Group Africa, looks after the brand, the product and the shared content system.

  2. 2

    Local company

A company registered in the country runs the site. In South Africa that is Raging River Trading and Eastern Dawn Sports.

  3. 3

    Local licence

That company holds the licence from the national, provincial or state regulator,

  4. 4

    Local footer

Each footer names the company, the regulator and the licence number to check against the register.

For a South African player the point is simple: the company behind your terms, your money and your complaint is the local one. A Betway site in Ghana or Zambia gives you no cover in South Africa, and the reverse is also true.

Shared Rules Across the Group

These are the rules we can confirm for Betway South Africa. For any sister site, read that site's own terms, because those are the ones you accept at sign-up.

  • Age: Betway South Africa is for players aged 18 or older. Age limits differ by country, and the Botswana site states 21.
  • Residency: Betway's South African promotions are limited to citizens and permanent residents of South Africa.
  • FICA: some features are tied to full identity verification. Betway Crypto Pay, for example, opens only after you have completed FICA.
  • Your name on the bank account: withdrawals go to a bank account in your own name, with charges disclosed when you request the payout.
  • BetwayPlan: Super Group describes this responsible gaming programme as a commitment across all its brands. At Betway it covers cooling off, suspension and exclusion.
  • Help line: the free National Responsible Gambling Programme line is 0800 006 008, open 24 hours a day.

The details of each tool are on the self-exclusion page. Betway live chat is the quickest way to ask about any of this, and the support line is 0861 787 250.

Why Players Look at Sister Sites

Curiosity is the most common reason. A Betway player sees another brand from the same group and wonders whether it is a different experience. Usually it is a bit of both: the licence trail is shared, while the lobby, the look and the offers belong to the brand.

A different game mix is the second reason. Betway's lobby holds about 2,975 titles, from slots and crash games to live dealer tables from Evolution, Pragmatic Live, Playtech Live and Ezugi, with Aviator from Spribe for the crash fans. Jackpot City describes its own selection as more than 500 games, a smaller list that some players find easier to browse.

Each brand writes its own welcome offer. Betway's Welcome Pack asks for a wager of at least R50 to unlock 10 Free Spins on 12 Masks of Fire Drums, 10 Free Flights on Aviator and a R10 Free Bet, with no deposit match. The free spins page explains how those pieces work.

Last is plain preference: a brand's colours, app or tone of voice. That is a fine reason to look around, as long as you check the licence first and the offer second. If you would rather stay with the brand you know, Betway has everything on this page in one account.

Who a Sister Site Will Not Suit

A sister site is not a way around anything. If you have set a self-exclusion, cooling-off period or suspension at Betway, it exists to protect you, and opening an account at a related brand to get round it defeats the purpose. Betway's tools belong to your Betway profile, so do not assume they are mirrored elsewhere, and do not use that gap to keep playing on a break.

Self-exclusion also has a national side

The National Gambling Board keeps the register of self-excluded persons. You ask the operator, who files the forms with the provincial board and the National Gambling Board, and an exclusion lasts at least six months and is lifted only after counselling.

A sister site is also a poor fit if you are chasing a loss, are unsure the money is affordable to lose, or are under 18. If that sounds familiar, the free helpline on 0800 006 008 is open around the clock, and you can send "HELP" on WhatsApp to 076 675 0710. The self-exclusion guide explains each Betway tool and how long it lasts, and the about page shows how this guide is checked.

For everyone else, the habit is simple: check the licence number against the register, read that brand's terms and keep your play inside a budget. Our casino guides explain RTP, volatility and play-through rules.

Answers

Betway Sister Sites: Quick Answers

Who owns Betway?

Betway belongs to Super Group, a holding company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SGHC. In South Africa the licensed operating companies are local: Raging River Trading (Pty) Ltd and Eastern Dawn Sports (Pty) Ltd.

Is Jackpot City a Betway sister site?

Yes, in the strictest sense. Jackpot City South Africa is operated by Eastern Dawn Sports (Pty) Ltd, the same company that holds the Mpumalanga bookmaker licence 9-2-1-09658 used for Betway.

What is the Betway licence number in South Africa?

There are two. Raging River Trading (Pty) Ltd holds Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board bookmaker licence 10181496-012, and Eastern Dawn Sports (Pty) Ltd holds Mpumalanga Economic Regulator bookmaker licence 9-2-1-09658. Both appear on the National Gambling Board's Verified Operators list.

Does Betway have sites in other African countries?

Yes. Super Group lists Betway markets in Ghana, South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria and Botswana, and a Namibian site carries a Betway footer too. Each has its own local company and regulator, so a licence from one country does not cover another.

Can I use one account on Betway and Jackpot City?

This page cannot confirm that an account carries across brands, so do not assume it does. Each brand has its own site, sign-up and terms. Ask live chat on the site you are using before you deposit.

How do I check that a licence is real?

Match three things: the licence number, the company name and the regulator. The status page helps with the technical side, while the National Gambling Board's Verified Operators list and the Western Cape licence-holder page cover the licence side. For Mpumalanga, the certificate carries a check code you can send by SMS.

Are Spin Casino, Ruby Fortune and Lucky Nugget Betway sister sites?

They are Super Group brands, so they share a parent with Betway, but they are not part of Betway's South African licence. Each has its own licences in the markets where it operates.
